Make a list of things that are in your classroom.  List 5 things that you see.  They don't have to be objects.

A list Please....

Just a list.  That's all I want.  That's all I need.  To make a list of likes... or dislikes....

Time for August Reading!

Can you believe it's August already? The good news is that there is still plenty of time to read before school starts! (Quinley is getting as much reading in during August as she can. She likes to read behind the couch.)

You should be receiving a letter from either Mrs. Rumsey or myself telling you whose class you will be in soon--either this week or early next week. We are both very excited to know who we will be hanging out with and we are looking forward to talking about the books you all are reading.
I just finished a book called How to Steal a Dog and I really enjoyed it! It was probably my favorite fiction book this summer. Now I am reading Project Mulberry about a Korean girl and American boy who create a project around silkworms. One cool part about the book is that between each chapter the author has a conversation with the main character--so I am getting to see what the author was thinking as she was writing the book!

I was super excited to see a post from Emma and also from Sam and Sarah's whole family!!

Emma said: hey peep's!!!
I'v been reading DEAR WISKERS,KATIE KAZOO SWICHAROO AND RAMONA QUIMBLY AGE 8.
I'm so excited to start 3rd grade.I wonder what teacher I'm going to have but I know they are both great teachers. see you soon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are looking forward to seeing you too, Emma!

The Dubois Family said: Hi 3rd Grade Teachers! Mom has been reading the most, she has read Adam by Ted Dekker, she likes the freaky stuff. She also likes Harlan Coben and finished Caught another suspense thriller. She also read Windmills of the Gods, an old (1987) book by Sidney Sheldon. Right now she is reading Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, which she agrees with Mrs. S that while interesting, some of the background info is a bit foreign. Dad is reading a Dale Carnegie book - he likes anything inspirational! Sam just finished The Grosse Adventures, by Annie Auerbach. Sam liked the adventure, the characters and especially the rocket. Sarah is reading Voyage on the Great Titanic (part of a Dear America series-they may not be published yet-she is reading a Proof). Sarah likes the main character, Margaret Ann Brady because she is generous and kind. Seth is reading Top of the Order by John Coy - of course it is a book about baseball!! Still enjoying our summer break, but can't wait to hear which teachers we have this year. The DuBois Family It is so cool that the whole family is reading together! I can't wait to hear more!

So, keep reading and checking back here to see what everyone else is reading.

July--A Great Month to Read!

At least once in July you need to go to the beach! So I did! And, of course, I brought a book. I also stuck my toe in the water and it was wayyyy too cold so I sat back down to read some more. Right now I am reading a book called How To Steal A Dog. It is about a little girl who is homeless and comes up with a plan to raise enough money to get an apartment for her family. I like this book so much that we may read it this year as a class story. What do you think? Would you be surprised if I told you there was a dog in the story? I love dogs...
I was excited to hear from more of you this last week! It is soooo wonderful to know that there are so many readers beginning third grade this year!

Shelby said: I have been reading Leperchan in Late Winter and also a coup0le Junie B. Jones books.
Great choice, Shelby!

McKenna said: I have been reading Judy Moody Around the world in 8 1/2 days. Its where in school they have different groups and they get together and they have to tell about different countries and they have to do it in 8 1/2 days. I have also read Berenstain Bears and the Perfect Crime Almost. It is where the bears at school the cubs have to clear off the bulletin boards and in the teachers lounge they fined the Declaration of Bear Independance they are are going to put in on display for the 4th of July but there is a guy that wants to steal it and sell it to a rich guy. The thief lives on a boat and he wants to use the money to buy a house. He pretends to be the authenticator and switches them. The bears cubs find out but you will have to read it to find out the ending. Cant wait to see you. Bye McKenna, You certainly can't go wrong with Judy Moody! And who doesn't love the Berenstain Bears. I don't think I've read that one yet, so I'll have to put it on my list of "Must Reads". So fun to hear from you!!

And Leah said: hi evryone!!! i wrote something along time ago but i gues i did it wrong becaus i dont see it on here. OK! I am reading RAMONA! I like all her books nad today i am going to see the movie! I also read the wimpy kid books to. Alli A and I went to the libray and got a craft book and made crafts. Dos that count? We had so much fun! I cant wait to find out who my teacher is! I think you are both super cool! 3rd grade is going to rock! Leah, I'm so sorry we missed your first post! But I'm super excited that you visited again...Ramona is one of the best characters ever created for third graders if you ask me. How was the movie? And you better believe that craft books count!! I'd love to see what crafts you made.
Colby said: Hi Mrs. Surridge! I can't WAIT for 3rd grade! To which I say DITTO!

Both Mrs. Rumsey and I are very excited to meet everyone in our classes. We are just bummed that we have to split you up! We both want all of you! You should be getting your letters in the next couple weeks.

I'm in love with Summer Reading!

Reading at the pool... :)

Gosh, can you believe it is already the end of July? It is going really fast, but the best part is that there is still a whole month left of summer reading!! And when that is over, there will be a whole year of third grade reading! YeeHah!
I had my neighborhood book club last night and had so much fun talking about the book we all read. My friends made me think about the story in ways I wouldn't have thought about it if I hadn't talked to them. Talking about stories makes them even better than you thought they were!
I also read a book called The White Giraffe about a girl who moves to South Africa and learns how to ride a rare white giraffe and a biography about Leonardo DaVinci, who was a genius! I'm still reading my devotions each morning, a book on the Holy Spirit and a couple books on how to be a better teacher.
It was great to hear from Allison, who wrote: Allison arriola said...

I'm reading too!

I just finished "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls.  In this picture I am reading in my car while waiting for Amelia to finish her horse lesson.  What will I read next???  Hmmm.  I'll probably ask Mrs. Surridge for an idea.  That is usually the best way to get a book!

What are you reading this week?

Hi everyone! Have you ever been caught reading at the movies??? It helps if you bring a flashlight...Mrs. Rumsey and I were so excited to hear from Nathan! Here is what he wrote:

NATHAN said...

I am reading The Malted Falcon. I am on Chapter 4. I also am reading Hess me Deadly but I left it at my Grandma's house. My mom and I went to the library and I got 6 books. I can't wait to read them all.

Wow, Nathan! You are a reader! I can't wait to find out how you like The Malted Falcon. I just finished one from that same series called The Cameleon Wore Chartruese. I hope you like it! Do you think I should read The Malted Falcon too? I'm not sure if I've heard of Hess Me Deadly, but, if you ever get it back from your Grandma, I'd love to know if you liked it...Six library books!!! That's a jackpot!! I'm so glad you joined us on our reading blog!

Right now I am reading a book for my neighborhood book club called The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. So far it is very hard to read because it takes place in Sweden, a country I’ve never been too so I have no connections to make while I’m reading. Plus it uses a lot of words I am not familiar with…did you know that the money in Sweden is called kronor? It also talks about places that I can’t pronounce and have never heard of before. That makes it hard to be metacognitive!! Help!! I’m really going to have to concentrate in order to finish and be able to talk about what I read with all my book club friends! But it is always fun to have a challenge!

I also got a new book called Reading Ladders. The author is a teacher who loves to find books that her students will enjoy reading. That is what I want to do in third grade! I am also reading the book called True Faced. It is a non-fiction book so I don't have to read it from beginning to end. It has different than a story because I can skip around on the chapters if I want. I hope you are all enjoying your reading time! Let us know what you are reading! Mrs. Surridge and Mrs. Rumsey

We're still reading!!

Hey, Third Graders!!
This is Mrs. Surridge and over the holiday weekend I finished The Penderwicks about four sisters on a summer vacation. It reminded me of summer vacations I took with my three younger sisters. I also read a book about how God wants us to use our money, called Your Money Counts. I had no idea how many Bible verses there are that show us how to spend the money that God has given us! It was a fascinating book and will completely change the way I save the money I make. I also read a book about putting all our trust in God called True-Faced. Last night I started a book called The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse. It's about a gecko named Chet who is a private detective. So far it is making me laugh on every page!
Here are some comments we've gotten so far!

They go to the Magic Tree House and find a leaf with a message. They say their magic chant and the tree house starts to shake and then it gets absolutley still! Then chapter 2 starts.
